Mexican GP F1 Betting Tips & Preview

Could it be a case of another year, another Hamilton World Championship clinched in Mexico? It seems remarkable that for the third year running the title could be decided here, especially as they switched this Grand Prix with the US one in what was probably a bid to avoid it happening. He will need to outscore Bottas by 14 points at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for it to be mathematically certain, so he is more likely to be crowned in Austin barring disaster in the next two races. Regardless of the outcome of their championship battle, it has been another great year for Mercedes, with both championships secure for a record sixth consecutive year, but they will want to finish strongly in order to stop their rivals building momentum for 2020. Can Ferrari spoil the party and continue their impressive second half of the season or will Red Bull find their first win since the summer break? 21.co.uk’s tipster is back again to give you his take on the F1 betting action.

Here are our F1 betting tips for the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix.

Mexican Grand Prix Formula 1 Betting Tips

Mexican Grand Prix Qualifying Tip

Sebastian Vettel Fastest Qualifier - 3/1

Ferrari have taken a clean sweep of pole positions since the summer break, including a front row lockout last time out in Japan. I can’t see anyone stopping them making it six in a row, with Mexico featuring two long straights. The only caveat to this is the altitude the racetrack is situated at which means engine performance will be limited due to the low air density. This will reduce the engine advantage they enjoy, but I still think they’ll have too much for their rivals on Saturday. I’ve gone for Vettel, rather than Leclerc, as I feel as though his new found confidence since his win in Singapore will enable him to return to his best between now and the end of the season - especially now the pressure is off. He also has more experience at this racetrack and took an excellent pole in 2017 to fend off Verstappen from taking his youngest pole sitter record. You can get this F1 bet at odds of 3/1. If you back it each way, with 1/3 odds for the first two places, you will get your money back should he finish second in qualifying.

Mexican Grand Prix Winner Tip

Red Bull Winning Team - 7/2

Max Verstappen has written off his chances of winning any races between now and the end of the season, with the Dutchman thinking he will be limited to the podium at best - we disagree. Verstappen has crossed the line in first place in the two previous races here both from second on the grid. The altitude should play into Red Bull’s hands and, just like in Austria, I expect them to have the fastest car come race day, meaning there will be an opportunity to pick up their first win since Hockenheim. Verstappen is priced at online betting odds of 15/4 to win on Sunday, but we feel as though you might as well back Red Bull to win at a similar price of 7/2 if you’re following this tip. It means you get Alexander Albon as another opportunity to win, with the layout of the opening section in Mexico City likely to cause chaos on the first lap.

Where is the Value?

Sergio Perez Top 10 Finish - 13/10

It’s a return home for Sergio Perez this week, and he will be looking to score points in front of his home crowd, as Racing Point look to close down Toro Rosso in sixth in the constructors’ championship. The Mexican has a good record at this racetrack, with points finishes in three of the four races since F1 returned here. We seem to back him to finish in the points regularly. Given that he has in four of the last five races in 2019, there is probably a reason for it. He is available at F1 odds of 13/10 to do it again.

Long Shot of the Weekend

Romain Grosjean First Retirement - 11/1

Romain Grosjean has retained his seat at Haas for 2020 despite a difficult season for the Frenchman. He has seven DNFs to his name already in 2019 and has come together multiple times with his teammate Magnussen, which is probably the last thing you need when you’re a driver under pressure. Grosjean has demonstrated good raw speed over his career, but his tendency to find trouble has probably cost him the chance to drive for a top team in the future. When looking for a long shot in F1 that might come to pass, you’re generally restricted to the first retirements or fastest laps market, so we’re going to tip Grosjean to be first retirement here based on how his season has gone so far. You can back him at odds of 11/1 to add to the first retirements he got in Hungary and Russia.

Other Mexican Grand Prix Bets of Interest

Valterri Bottas Podium Position - 9/4

Bottas is the last man who can stop Hamilton winning the championship in 2019 and he can take great confidence from an excellent performance at Suzuka. He qualified ahead of Hamilton to lineup third on the grid, before taking advantage of Vettel’s ‘false start’ to sweep into the lead before the first corner. He will need a lot of luck to win the Championship this year, but will definitely be looking to secure the runner up spot for the first time in his career. As for this race, we can see him achieving at least the podium in Mexico, and he will want to finish the season strongly given the criticism of him in recent seasons for tailing off after the summer break. You can back him to make it five podiums in the last six races at F1 betting odds of 9/4.

Lando Norris Top 6 Finish - 3/1

It has been a good debut season for Lando Norris in F1, which has coincided with Mclaren returning to a decent position in the constructors’ championship in 2019. He might have been outscored by his more experienced teammate Sainz, but he has shown good potential considering he is only 19. He has also been unlucky at times this season with multiple reliability related DNFs. We can see him adding to the top 6 finishes he achieved in Bahrain and Austria if his luck changes this weekend, which is available at F1 odds of 3/1.
