Champions League Round of 16 First Leg Preview

Atletico Madrid Vs Chelsea Tuesday 23rd February: 20:00

Very few teams are as difficult to beat as Atletico Madrid, just ask Liverpool. Last year, the Spanish side ended Liverpool’s hopes of back-to-back Champions Leagues and this season, they’re currently sat at the top of La Liga. However, they face a Chelsea side who are unbeaten in seven games since Thomas Tuchel was appointed as manager so this is definitely one of the more evenly-matched ties of the week. Neither of these sides tend to conceded many goals but the one statistic that stands out comes from Atleti, who have gone in the opposite direction to Chelsea since Tuchel’s appointment as they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last seven games, conceding 10 goals, which is more goals than they conceded in their 18 prior (8).

This is a game that will go down to the wire. Neither side will gain a substantial lead in this fixture and I believe both will be happy with a score draw. Which is why I’m going to back a 1-1 draw.

Game to finish 1-1 - 5/1

Lazio Vs Bayern Munich Tuesday 23rd February: 20:00

Lazio are a side who, no matter how good they make look on paper, always flatter to deceive on the field. With big names such as Ciro Immobile, Luis Alberto and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic taking centre stage, you would expect more from the club but an aging core to the team has led to Lazio being pipped at the post in a number of games. They come up against a Bayern Munich side who have failed to hit the dizzy heights they set for themselves last season but still look like one of the best sides in the world. The Club World Cup has seen Bayern look fatigued in recent games and it has had a similar effect to that of which it had on Liverpool last season. The last two times Bayern have gone into a Champions League game on the back of two games without a win, it’s finished with the same scoreline Bayern 3, their opponents 1.

I can’t see past Bayern Munich in this game and I definitely can’t see past them for the tie. If you’re less confident than I, you may go for a draw but I’ll back the stats which suggest a 3-1 win for Bayern

Final Score 1-3 - 10/1

Atalanta Vs Real Madrid Wednesday 24th February: 20:00

This is another game that I’m really looking forward to; however, Atalanta weren’t quite at the levels they were a few years ago at the start of the season but they’ve bloomed again after their defeat to Verona in November, losing just one game in all competitions since. On the other hand, you have the injury-stricken Real Madrid could field an XI of injured players at the moment. However, they still have a number of capable players available here. Injury worries have led to Madrid suring up their defence and playing a different style of football than previously which has led to three clean sheets on the bounce. If they pick up a fourth here, they will be in a fantastic position to qualify for the quarter finals.

As much as I want to see these two sides throw caution to the wind and go all out attack. I have a feeling this game is going to be very defensive and provide us with our first 0-0 of the Round of 16.

Borussia Monchengladbach Vs Manchester City Wednesday 24th February: 20:00

Gladbach’s manager Marco Rose was announced as Dortmund’s future manager last week and he’ll take charge of the club in the Summer. However, in his immediate future are Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who are the current favourites to win the Champions League. City are on an 18-game winning streak in all competitions and we expect them to up-the-ante in the Champions League after an impressive run. They’re facing a side with just one win in five and a home defeat to relegation-threatened Mainz 05. City should win comfortably here.

I think City will have a comfortable time here. However, I don’t think they’ll score too many goals. I’m going to back a 2-0 win for the English side.

Final Score 0-2 - 13/2

Champions League Round of 16 Draw:

Borussia Monchengladbach Vs Manchester City

Borussia Monchengladbach were a bit of a surprise package in the 2020 Champions League group stage as they progressed at the expense of Europa League finalists - Inter Milan in the alleged ‘Group of Death’ which also featured Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk. Meanwhile, Manchester City eased out of group C which also contained Porto, Olympiacos and Marseille. Given how unpredictable Gladbach have been this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they held City or were dominated by the English side. However, we can’t see them prevailing here.

Progressing: Manchester City

Lazio Vs Bayern Munich

Lazio are a side who are truly progressing in the modern football world and a big part of that is striker Ciro Immobile who scored more league goals than Robert Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi last season. However, Champions League winners Bayern Munich are incredibly difficult to beat in 90 minutes - never mind over 180. You certainly wouldn’t go against them in regards to sports betting. So we’ll back Bayern to progress.

Progressing: Bayern Munich

Atletico Madrid Vs Chelsea

One of the tastiest ties of the round has the side who eliminated Liverpool last season Atletico Madrid take on Chelsea. Chelsea were demolished by Bayern last season and have struggled in recent months while Atletico have only been beaten by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich so far this season. ‘Atleti’ are also top of La Liga at present despite having games in hand on any other team in the league. I think Atletico will progress.

Progressing: Atletico Madrid

RB Leipzig Vs Liverpool

RB Leipzig’s reward for finishing second in group H is one of the toughest opponents they could have received in Liverpool. However, this Liverpool side will be weakened and by the time this fixture comes around they could be in even worse state with a busy December and January period. However, RB Leipzig have been par for the course and are tough to beat. Liverpool will progress but it won’t be easy.

Progressing: Liverpool

Porto Vs Juventus

Juventus are a side who have a history of being on the wrong end of upsets in the Champions League, just ask Lyon, Young Boys and Sevilla all of whom have recently beaten the ‘Old Lady’ in Champions League competition. Porto were impressive in Manchester City’s group but the only teams they’ve beaten in knockout rounds in the Champions League since 2009 are Roma and Basel. They’ve lost almost every fixture they were expected too which is why I’m backing Juventus.

Progressing: Juventus

Barcelona Vs Paris-Saint Germain

A fixture that will contain a seriously dangerous amount of PTSD for PSG supporters is Barcelona who, last time they faced, overcame a 4-0 first leg deficit to progress. An impressive stat in this game is that in the last three games between these sides, the score at half-time has been 2-0 to the home side. In-fact in five of the last six games, the home side has scored twice before half-time. We expect goals here but with PSG sacking their manager it will be tough to analyse here. I’m going to go for Barcelona.

Progressing: Barcelona

Sevilla Vs Borussia Dortmund

This fixture is another equally as enticing tie as RB Leipzig Vs Liverpool as both of these teams have the potential to beat anyone on their day. They also have the potential to lose to anyone as they can be quite unpredictable, Sevilla are notorious winners at the Europa League stage but can they push forward and pull off results of a similar caliber against Champions League level opposition like Borussia Dortmund? They’re certainly good enough but I’m not sure they will.

Progressing: Borussia Dortmund

Atalanta Vs Real Madrid

When Real Madrid took on Ajax a few years back, it was a similar story to this of Atalanta, free-flowing attacking football against the reputable Madrid who have been awful since their trio of Champions League victories in a row a few years back. Atalanta had their best ever Champions League campaign and were an absolute joy to watch, there have been rumours of discontent amongst Atalanta’s best players in recent months and I think they’ll fall short against Real Madrid.

Progressing: Real Madrid
