Community Shield - Manchester City Vs Liverpool Preview

Two of the greatest sides in Premier League history go head-to-head for the first time in the 2019/2020 campaign in the 2019 Community Shield. Manchester City are the current holders of the competition after defeating Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea last year but Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will likely prove a much sterner challenge this time around.

Historically, Liverpool are one of the best teams in the Community Shield’s history, they first appeared in the tournament in 1922 but lost 1-0 to Huddersfield and wouldn’t appear in the competition again for 31 years, they would go on to hold the trophy three years in a row, after sharing the competition with both West Ham and Manchester United before retaining against Everton in 1966. Eight years later, Liverpool embarked on a streak of winning six cup finals in a row before eventually losing to Manchester United and Everton in 1983 and 1984. Liverpool last won the trophy back in 2006 when a late Peter Crouch winner helped them defeat last seasons Runners Up - Chelsea.

Manchester City on the other hand, haven’t had as much luck in the competition, their first taste of the old Charity Shield came when they lost 4-0 against Herbert Chapman’s Arsenal side in 1934, they went on to win the competition three years later by beating the holders at the time - Sunderland. City then went on to appear in 4/6 Charity Shield finals between 1968 and 1973. Under the new era - City have appeared in 4 Community Shield finals, winning 2 and losing 2.

Remarkably this will be the first time that Manchester City and Liverpool face-off in a Community Shield final.

Our thoughts

Manchester City defeated Liverpool in the race to win the Premier League but Liverpool conquered Europe to lift the Champions League trophy for the sixth time, therefore this game is realistically between the two best teams in the world at the moment. Manchester City typically have a terrible record against Liverpool but since Pep Guardiola arrived at the helm, the teams have been fairly even. We feel that this game will have so much more pressure on teams than a typical Community Shield final as this will be about momentum going into the new season. We think that after their poor pre-season, Liverpool they will bounce back here.

Our Prediction: Liverpool to win 2-1 11/1*
