England vs Italy Betting Preview
The talk is that football is coming home, and we think if England fans had anything to do with it, then the trophy may already be in the cabinet at Wembley.
Taking on Denmark in the semi-finals, the Three Lions were 1-0 down thanks to a superb Damsgaard freekick before an own goal levelled the scores before half-time. But as both sides battled to win the game, extra time was needed to find a winner. Step up Harry Kane, whose spot-kick was initially saved by Kasper Schmeichel before being fired home to secure England's place in a major tournament final for the first time in 55 years.
On the other hand, Italy has faced far inferior opposition for the majority of Euro 2021 before being handed a semi-final tie with Spain. With both teams looking for the chance to secure a place in the final, and more importantly, silverware, the game went all the way to a penalty shootout which the Azzurri won 4-2.
As we head into Sunday's match at Wembley, the game is there for the taking. Both teams have conceded minimal goals, with Jordan Pickford holding the record for the lowest at Euro 2021 with one. A strong defence from both teams has helped maintain that form and we believe neither side will want to concede first.
Goals are a different story. During the group stages, Italy were rampant in front of goal and continued that form until the semi-finals. However, England hadn't scored more than two goals in a game until their steamroll of Ukraine in the quarter-finals. Harry Kane eventually found his scoring boots and has continued that trend, so if the floodgates open for either side, the attack power of both teams could be hard to contend with.
With that in mind, we're going for BTTS in the game, which could mean we're heading to extra time. But if you're looking for a goalscorer bet, then we're backing Raheem Sterling to open the scoring.
England vs Italy Starting 11s
From a starting 11 perspective, we expect both managers to continue with similar lineups that have previously done well throughout the tournament. Gareth Southgate will once again turn to his talisman Harry Kane, with Raheem Sterling likely to continue in the strike force. In defence, we suspect it will remain unchanged with Harry Maguire and John Stones staying as the steady rocks in the backline.
Italy are one of the only sides to play almost every player in their Euro 2021 squad at some point across the tournament. However, in the more recent games, Federico Chiesa has proved more of a goal threat than Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne. That said, none of the Azzurri frontmen should be discounted in front of goal. In the backline, it’s the looming figures of Chiellini and Bonucci that England will have to defeat, which is no small feat given their 32-game unbeaten run.
