Europa League - Group Stages

Europa League Group A

Team Played Won Drawn Lost GD Points
Sevilla 6 5 0 1 +11 15
APOEL 6 3 1 2 2 10
Qarabag 6 1 2 3 -3 5
Dudelange 6 0 1 5 -10 1

Overview

It was fairly obviously that Sevilla would win group A and they were massive favourites to do so. No surprise they won their first five games but it was the final game against APOEL where they were defeated a result that ensured APOEL progressed ahead of Qarabag.

Shock result of the round

APOEL 1-0 Sevilla - 12th December 2019

The previously mentioned APOEL victory was the most shocking of the group but it is worth noting that eventual Europa League finalist Sevilla had nothing to play for.

Europa League Group B

Team Played Won Drawn Lost GD Points
Malmo FF 6 3 2 1 +2 11
Copenhagen 6 2 3 1 +1 9
Dynamo Kiev 6 1 4 1 -3 7
Lugano 6 0 3 3 -3 3

Overview

Group B was the most boring group of the Europa League but it did see one shock as Dynamo Kiev put in one of the most disappointing overall performances to only win one of their six games and end up eliminated from the competition.

Shock result of the round

Dynamo Kiev 1-1 Lugano

A little bit on context, Kiev hosted bottom placed Lugano who had not led a game all campaign and if they won, they progressed. Lugano scored first and led until the 94th minute when the highly-rated Viktor Tsyhankov equalised. To say this was a disappointing campaign would be an understatement.

Europa League Group C

Team Played Won Drawn Lost GD Points
Basel 6 4 1 1 +8 13
Getafe 6 4 0 2 +4 12
Krasnodar 6 3 0 3 -4 9
Trabzonspor 6 0 1 5 -8 1

Overview

At the start of the season, this was the hardest group to judge due to the quality of the teams in it. However, Basel did very well and deserved their spot at the top of the group. Getafe were favourites but still performed well and Trabzonspor's performances were fairly abysmal.

Shock Result of the Round

Basel 5-0 Krasnodar

The first day of the group stages saw Basel stamp their authority on the competition with a convincing 5-0 win over Krasnodar. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that they only drew 2-2 with bottom placed Trabzonspor in the next game which was the Turkish sides only point.
