European Super Cup - Chelsea Vs Liverpool Preview
The winners of both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League go head-to-head in the European Super Cup. This will be the first time that two English teams have faced each other in the competition and it’ll be the first time in 14 years that an English team has won the trophy despite being in the final four times since.
Chelsea have lost two out of their three attempts to win the trophy meanwhile Liverpool have won their last two Super Cup matches.

Our Top Five Bets For The European Super Cup
At 21.co.uk we have one of the biggest Online Betting UK selections around. Here are our Five Top Bets for the European Super Cup.
Jurgen Klopp and Frank Lampard have never gone head to head as managers but since Roman Abramovich took over the Blues, this has been one of the most even contests in the Premier League.
Chelsea’s History in the Competition
Chelsea’s last European Super Cup match ended in heartbreak when Bayern Munich substitute Javi Martinez scored an 121st minute equaliser to take the game to penalties where Romelu Lukaku’s miss condemned Chelsea to back-to-back defeats. The season prior, Chelsea were dominated by current holders Atletico Madrid and more specifically Columbian striker Radamel Falcao who scored a first half hat-trick.
Chelsea’s only win in the competition came before the Roman Abramovich era as Gianluca Vialli’s Chelsea triumphed over Real Madrid in the 1998 final. The game was a fairly drab affair and saw Real Madrid have the better of play before a late Gus Poyet strike gave them a 1-0 win against the European Cup winners.
Liverpool’s History In the Competition
If you are someone that uses facts and history for sports betting then you’ll probably be betting for Liverpool to win here. Their last two appearances have both been wins as in 2005, extra time goals from Luis Garcia and super sub Djibril Cisse helped Liverpool overturn a 1-0 deficit to beat CSKA Moscow 3-1. Meanwhile, in 2001 Liverpool took a commanding 3-0 lead over Bayern Munich thanks to John Arne Riise, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen before launching a comeback but ultimately Liverpool held on and won 3-2. Liverpool also beat German opposition in their first victory back in 1977 when they beat Hamburg 7-1 on aggregate.
Liverpool have also suffered two defeats in Super Cup finals after losing 4-3 on aggregate to Anderlecht in 1978 and 2-0 against Juventus in 1984.
These two sides could have more contrasting starts to the season, Liverpool dismantled Norwich while Chelsea were dominated by Manchester United so based off first impressions, Liverpool are the clear favourites but the European Super Cup has had surprise winners more often than not. If Lampard can win against Liverpool then it’ll go a long way to putting their devastating 4-0 defeat against Manchester United behind them and give them some much needed confidence. However, if Liverpool play a full strength side, I can only see one winner.
