Premier League Predictions - Week 17

Premier League predictions

When it came to last weeks betting tips MG took centre stage with a 6-2 victory, this gives the expert a 9-7 lead over TM who until three weeks ago was in firm control of the Premier League Predictions. The Christmas period is a hectic time whether it’s in regards to betting, playing or Fantasy Football! However, as the winter gets colder the Premier League action gets hotter! So let’s start off with our Premier League Betting Tips.

Liverpool Vs Watford - Saturday 14th December (12:30)

Liverpool are over a third of the way through the busiest month of their season and because of that, they’ve had to rest players. Even with players rested the Reds have scored 10 goals in three games conceding only two goals in that time. However, the big story of this fixture doesn’t come from Merseyside as 20th placed Watford will be undergoing their first game with Nigel Pearson at the helm. The question is will we see the Nigel Pearson of Leicester or the Nigel Pearson of Derby County?

TM‘s Prediction

Liverpool may have concerns about the fitness of some of their key players, after electing not to rest them during their game in midweek. That said, the problems at Watford run deeper than the managerial position, and it’ll take Nigel Pearson a while to improve their fortunes. I think a few Watford fans may bury their heads in the sand at full-time.

Over 3.5 Goals - Evens

MG’s Prediction

I think we might see a number of changes and a different style to Watford, I think Nigel Pearson will finally be the manager that realizes Watford can’t defend and tries to focus on boosting their defence. The likes of Shaqiri and Origi will probably start for Liverpool and Watford will be much improved. My prediction is 2-0 Liverpool but I’ll go for something a little safer.

Under 2.5 Goals - 39/20

Burnley Vs Newcastle United - Saturday 14th December (15:00)

If you look at the current form table, Newcastle are in the Champions League places under Steve Bruce after picking up four wins in their last six games. Newcastle also did the double over Burnley last season with the Clarets conceding twice on both occasions and with Burnley in poor form. Questions will be asked if Newcastle can make it five wins out of seven here.

MG’s Prediction

In both of Newcastle’s wins against Burnley, defenders scored and this season the majority of their goals have been scored by defenders. The Clarets will be thankful that Allan Saint-Maximin is missing for the Magpies and with Miguel Almiron and Joelinton out of form, a Burnley clean sheet looks good to me.

Burnley to keep a clean sheet 29/20

TM‘s Prediction

Newcastle are in incredible form, grinding out big results against strong sides. Allan Saint-Maximin’s injury means he’s a big loss for them, and I think Burnley will play a lot tighter defensively than they did against Tottenham, in order to register their first point for four matches.

Draw - 49/20

Chelsea Vs Bournemouth - Saturday 14th December (15:00)

Frank Lampard will know that in recent games, especially at home - they haven’t been good enough but they can go into this fixture knowing that Eddie Howe is thinking exactly the same thing. Then again, so was Manuel Pellegrini and his West Ham side came away with a fantastic three points. This one could go either way but we think one thing is for certain, we should expect goals!

TM‘s Prediction

Chelsea have been troubled at Stamford Bridge on more than one occasion this season, but given that Bournemouth have now lost five games in a row, they’ll surely be confident. Personally, I can see that confidence becoming the kind of arrogance that saw them lose to West Ham a fortnight ago, so I’m backing a slightly outlandish bet.

Double Chance: Draw or Bournemouth - 3/1

MG’s Prediction

Chelsea are ¼ here and I really don’t think they’re good value at that. Bournemouth might have been poor recently but so have Chelsea. I can’t see this being a goal scoring bonanza as the goal scoring ability of both sides is criminally overrated.

No Goals First Half - 3/1

Leicester City Vs Norwich City - Saturday 14th December (15:00)

When you look at these two sides, this looks like it should be a foregone conclusion as Leicester are unbeaten in their last six and Norwich are second bottom with a dreadful away record. Jamie Vardy is looking to score for the ninth consecutive game and must have his own record in his sights. Daniel Farke might see this as a free hit for Norwich who have caused an upset against Manchester City this season. So, they have it in them to get a result here.

MG’s Prediction

We often see players up their game when they play their former clubs and I’m expecting the same here with James Maddison. The England Midfielder scored 15 goals in 47 games for Norwich between 2016-2018 and I expect him to open his account against them here.

James Maddison to score anytime - 37/20

TM‘s Prediction

Leicester are playing really exciting football, as Brendan Rodgers balances free-flowing play with respect for the opposition. Meanwhile Norwich are still trying to find some consistency, but you certainly wouldn’t back them to get anything at the King Power. Leicester to win comfortably in my eyes.

Leicester to Win & Over 3.5 Goals - 6/5

Sheffield United Vs Aston Villa - Saturday 14th December (15:00)

After a surprise defeat to Newcastle, the Blades got back on track after a good win at Norwich. Meanwhile after back to back defeats against Chelsea and Leicester, Dean Smith will arguably be thankful to be coming up against a newly promoted side. On paper, this starts a brilliant run of fixtures for Aston Villa and is arguably their toughest fixture until January 12th. Both sides will believe they can win this one so it should be an entertaining encounter.

TM‘s Prediction

Sheffield United did well to overturn a deficit at Carrow Road, but I feel they’ll still have their 2-0 loss to Newcastle at Bramall Lane on their minds. Aston Villa have shown they can trouble sides away from home, but while I think they’ll score, I’m not sure they have enough to earn points.

Sheffield United to Win & BTTS - 23/10

MG’s Prediction

This is probably the most intriguing fixture of the weekend for me. Perhaps not the most watchable but I think this will be a good contest. Most Sheffield United games seem to have a goal in the first third of the game, so I’ll base my bet on that.

Over 0.75 goals to be scored before 30 mins - evens

Southampton Vs West Ham United - Saturday 14th December (17:30)

Southampton were unlucky not to get a point at the weekend but were punished for sitting back after taking the lead, the same could be said for West Ham who slowed down in the second half after taking the lead against Arsenal. So both these sides will be very disappointed not to be coming into this fixture off the back of a victory - the winner of this fixture will be the manager who gets his side to bounce back and put last weekend's misery behind them.

MG’s Prediction

Southampton were brought back down to earth at St James’ Park, they were the better team but simply weren’t good enough on the ball to win the game. It’ll be interesting to see if West Ham bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Arsenal. However, I am backing a Saints win here.

Half Time & Full Time - Southampton - 9/5

TM‘s Prediction

Despite the loss at Newcastle, Southampton are generally on an upwards curve, while West Ham are sinking closer and closer to the drop zone. I think this will be Manuel Pellegrini’s last game at West Ham, as Southampton win, but I can’t quite settle on the scoreline.

Southampton to Score Exactly 2 or 3 Goals - 11/10

Manchester United Vs Everton - Sunday 15th December (14:00)

On the 1st of December, the rumour mill was filled with news that if Manchester United lost the Manchester Derby and their match against Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur, he would be sacked. Now, they’re unbeaten in their last six Premier League games and have back to back wins against Manchester City and Tottenham. They still need a lot of work at the back and their biggest difficulty will be replicating their work ethic against an Everton side who made more challenges than any other Premier League side has this season against Chelsea. They’re battling for “Big Dunc”, that’s for sure!

TM‘s Prediction

If you remember his playing days, it seems almost unbelievable that Big Dunc is a Premier League manager, but he’s shown tactical nous and passion in his short time at the helm. Manchester United are growing in belief after two big results, but I can see them slipping up here.

Everton to Win - 15/4

MG’s Prediction Duncan Ferguson will have his Everton side battling against Manchester United, that's for sure but Manchester United are in decent form. It would be typical Man United to win a Manchester derby then draw to an out-of form Everton. So, that’s what I’ll go for.

Draw with Goals - 29/10

Wolves Vs Tottenham Hotspur - Sunday 15th December (14:00)

The masters of the draw host Spurs in what should be a Super Sunday to remember. You have to go back to September 14th to find the last time Wolves were beaten in the Premier League and that was a 5-2 defeat at Home to Chelsea. Since then they have won five games and drawn six. Spurs need to continue winning if they are to catch Chelsea and take 4th from them but Wolves themselves know that if they were just a little bit more clinical, they’d likely be top four themselves.

MG’s Prediction

Spurs probably won’t lose. Wolves have only lost twice in the league all season but drawn nine times. Son to score is probably a good shout as they will hit Wolves on the counter but I’ll go for a draw.

Draw - 5/2

TM‘s Prediction

Wolves have been playing well recently, unbeaten in eleven matches, and they fear no-one. Tottenham have been revived under Jose Mourinho, and they certainly have the ability to pick up another win, but I’m backing a draw, but a slightly more specific draw than MG, for variety.

Draw with Goals - 57/20

Arsenal Vs Manchester City - Sunday 15th December (16:30)

When you realise Manchester City have already dropped sixteen points this season, it’s clear to see how much they miss Aymeric Laporte. Arsenal, on the other hand, are still trying to replace Sol Campbell and Martin Keown but maybe their next manager can find a competent defender. Their interim manager has found a win, however, ending a run of nine games without a win in all competitions, can they follow it up against Manchester City?

TM‘s Prediction

Arsenal performed well in the final half hour of their game at West Ham, but they still have a lot further to go to prove that they’ve hit a turning point. Manchester City were shocked in their defeat to Manchester United, but I think they’ll recover here. If Freddie Ljungberg gets a win, he deserves a statue outside the Emirates Stadium.

Manchester City to Score Over 2.5 Goals - Evens

MG’s Prediction

In answer to that ridiculous question in the overview. No. However, I do think there will be back to back 1-3 away wins as Manchester City will walk through the Arsenal defence but haven’t kept a clean sheet themselves in a very long time.

Exact score 1-3 - 9/1

Crystal Palace Vs Brighton & Hove Albion - Monday 16th December (20:00)

Both these sides have picked up in December and find themselves looking back on their pre-season relegation worries as a distant memory. An interesting fact regarding Crystal Palace is that only one of their last six games have contained more than 2.5 goals meanwhile, Vicente Guaita has kept three clean sheets in a row and showed his worth in all three of those games.

MG’s Prediction

Monday Night Football is rarely a thriller and we can’t imagine Crystal Palace Vs Brighton will change that. Palace are usually quite strong at home but if we know Palace, this is the kind of game they’ll end up losing. So our bet is:

Exact Score: 0-1 - 15/2

TM‘s Prediction

The M23 Derby has thrown up some entertaining games in the four previous Premier League meetings, and I can see that continuing here. Crystal Palace have been unpredictable lately, but Brighton are enjoying their football, and I can see at least three goals being scored.
