Normally held in early June, the Derby Festival is the build-up to Royal Ascot. However, this year for the first time in its history, the race will be run in July. Usually a two-day event, the main card has been condensed with the Derby and the Oaks to be run on the same day, and we’ve picked out which stars are likely to shine in all of the key races.

Investec Woodcote EBF Stakes

Jim Crowley almost managed to see off Frankie Dettori to become top jockey at Royal Ascot, but it sadly wasn’t to be. Here at Epsom, he has a great chance to add to his tally with Mutazwwed, a 2-year-old who has enjoyed great success on the all-weather for Mark Johnston, he has the perfect opportunity to convert that form to the turf as a 7/2 chance in the betting.

Investec Surrey Stakes

The Surrey Stakes is the first listed race in the card at Epsom and it’s a 14/1 chance Jack’s Point who catches the eye after his run at Royal Ascot in the Buckingham Palace handicap. Running well after returning to the track after a 189 day break back in June at Newmarket, he could once again be a solid each-way shot here.

Investec Oaks

The Oaks is always an interesting contest with the best fillies in training given the chance to assert their dominance. This year, however, in our opinion the race is between two horses; Love and Frankly Darling, and we’re backing the latter of the two here. In two races so far this season, Frankly Darling is unbeaten, and that includes Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. That said, it does look like an open race where Gold Wand could be a surprise each-way chance in the betting.

Investec Derby

The highlight race of the day The Investec Derby, and this year due to its delay, it looks like a very interesting renewal. Numerous horses on the card have caught our eye including Aidan O’Brien trained Vatican City, but the one which catches the eye is Andrew Balding-trained Kameko. The winner of the 2000 Guineas as a 10/1 chance, he has risen through the ranks as a Group 2 and 3 victor before taking the Group One prize last time out.

Epsom Course Guide

One of the most testing courses in the UK, Epsom’s switchback is thought to be the ultimate trial for any runners looking to stamp their name in Group One history. A 1-mile 4-furlong course, it includes a stiff uphill climb and fast-paced descent before a gruelling uphill climb in the final furlong.

Elsewhere in UK Horse Racing

As well as the Oaks and the Derby to look ahead to this weekend, the Eclipse at Sandown is also on the cards, and it looks set to be the first appearance of the unstoppable Enable. Second, in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2019, she returned to the track last season after a similar 240-day break to beat Magical in this race last year. She will face some stiff competition in this year’s race with Royal Ascot winner Lord North expected to head post from the same stable and he looks a solid 6/1 chance to push Enable to the limit.
