With one of the biggest horses in racing massively underperforming two weeks ago - that’s right we’re talking about Altior, all eyes will be on the Tingle Creek to see who will be the biggest contender for the Champion Chase.

The race certainly isn’t short of options, and with 8 runners expected to head to post, we’ve picked out some of the runners that should catch the eye as they leap over the Sandown fences. First is Defi Du Seuil, trained by Philip Hobbs, the six-year-old has already picked up a win in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham this season and should be looking to build on that here. He’ll start the race as the favourite, and it will be down to Barry Geraghty to successfully steer him to victory.

We couldn’t go through this preview without mentioning Paul Nicholls-trained Politologue. Second, behind Altior at the Cheltenham Festival, he was the nearly horse yet again when finishing behind Defi Du Seuil less than three weeks ago. He’s a 9/2 chance here and should give a strong performance.

Waiting Patiently is a 12/1 chance at Sandown and because he is dropping back in trip for the Tingle Creek, he’s one that punters shouldn’t ignore. Despite winning the Ascot Chase last season, he is an outside chance for this race, but if he performs well we could see him head to King George at Kempton.

Jockeys to Watch at Sandown

Barry Geraghty Is there anything this man can’t do in National Hunt Racing? Barry Geraghty is one of the most noted jumps jockeys of this generation and always seems to be there or thereabouts in big-race situations. He’s got a 26.6% strike rate at Sandown and is expected to be aboard some top chances this weekend, so we suspect he’ll add to his winning tally here.

Harry Cobden One of the leading riders in the Paul Nicholls stable, Harry Cobden has an 18% strike rate over chase fences at Sandown, so he’s certainly one jockey that shouldn’t be discounted heading into big race scenarios.

Trainer to Watch at Sandown

** Philip Hobbs** Leading jumps trainer Philip Hobbs has no shortage of stable starlets to his name, and he’s sending two of them to Sandown this weekend in a bid to improve his already impressive 23.33% strike rate. We expect both of them to head to post as the favourite, but with him also focusing on Aintree it could be a prosperous weekend for the Somerset-based trainer.

Sandown Course Guide

Located in the heart of Surrey, Sandown is home to some of the biggest flat and national hunt races throughout the year. The highlight of the jumps season, the Tingle Creek Chase, which acts as a feeder race for Cheltenham festival has attracted horse such as Kauto Star and Desert Orchid since its inception in 1979, and in more recent renewals has been won by the likes of Dodging Bullets, Sprinter Sacre and Altior.

The course itself is run right-handed and is classed as one of the best in the UK for chasers thanks to the 7 fences they’ll need to tackle in the back straight. Horses who take a commanding position tend to do well here over both chase fences and hurdles as the testing conditions runners face can make it difficult for them to regain ground on a course where early speed is of the essence.

Elsewhere in Horse Racing

As well as Grade 1 racing at Sandown this weekend, we also have a full card of racing at Aintree for all our punters to consider. Nicky Henderson and Colin Tizzard are the trainers to watch here, with both sending Gold Cup hopefuls for their first outing of the season in the Many Clouds Chase. Might Bite and Native River provided punters with a thrilling battle in the 2018 renewal of the Cheltenham showpiece, and with both primed for a rematch, it’s going to prove interesting for punters.

Nico De Boinvillle, Richard Johnson and Derby Award winner Bryony Frost are all set to feature in this race, the latter aboard Black Corton, who again is no stranger to pulling top performances out of the bag when the going gets tough.
