NBA Week One Betting Tips
After much hype, some exciting roster changes and plenty of pre-season action, the 2019/20 NBA season begins in the early hours of Wednesday 23rd October, if you’re a UK fan. Due to the fast-paced turnaround when it comes to games, we’ll be picking our top five basketball betting tips for each calendar week, from now until June 2020, providing the best NBA betting tips for our online betting aficionados.
New Orleans Pelicans @ Toronto Raptors, Wednesday 23rd October, 1:00 am BST
We’d be remiss if we didn’t start with the opening game of the 2019/20 NBA season, which in traditional style features the reigning champions at home. In this case, it’s Toronto Raptors, whose 15/1 outsider success last season surprised many. Having lost several of their key players in the offseason though, they’re now (28/1) to win it this time around.
With that in mind, we look to their preseason form. The Raptors lost on aggregate in their two meetings with Houston Rockets and then were beaten convincingly at their Scotiabank Arena home by Chicago Bulls. Meanwhile, the Pelicans have a 4-0 record, boasting away wins over the Bulls, Atlanta Hawks, and San Antonio Spurs, and a nail-biting win over Utah Jazz. For these reasons, we’re starting big and going for the Pelicans to upset the apple cart early doors.
Detroit Pistons @ Indiana Pacers, Thursday 24th October, 00:00 am BST
Let’s get it on record, we think Milwaukee Bucks are going to top the Central Division. That said, part of the excitement is the openness of that Division, with the Bulls and Detroit Pistons looking to improve upon their performances last season, and Indiana Pacers hoping to climb higher in the Eastern Conference, although they should finish second in the Division.
The four games between these two last season were certainly entertaining, particularly if you’re of a Pacers persuasion, as they won three of those match-ups convincingly. However, Pistons did win one of the contests at their Little Caesars Arena home court, and the all-time regular-season record between them is still pretty close, with the Pacers winning 100 compared to the Pistons’ 94. For some niggling reason, we think Detroit Pistons will win this one.
Boston Celtics @ Philadelphia 76ers, Thursday 24th October, 00:30 am BST
For those that took the time out to read through our NBA season betting tips, you will know that we backed Philadelphia 76ers pretty highly, even tipping them as possible NBA 2020 Champions. As for Boston Celtics, we think they’ll make the Eastern Conference playoffs, but will struggle to challenge in the Atlantic Division. That said, both sides boast 100% preseason records.
While we’re not fully prepared to say the Celtics are going to earn themselves a shock win here, they have the potential to make life very difficult for the 76ers. Despite losing Kyrie Irving to Brooklyn Nets, and Al Horford to the opposition, there’s resilience within the roster, and we think that could well see the Celtics beat the spread.
Milwaukee Bucks @ Houston Rockets, Friday 25th October, 1:00 am BST
This is certainly an interesting clash to have so early on in the NBA campaign. We’ve gone on record as saying we think these two will be the sides to top their respective Conferences; Milwaukee Bucks in the East, and Houston Rockets in the West. However, we also think that neither will win the associated playoffs based on rosters alone, but either side could make a huge statement here with a convincing win. A spread of just +/- 1.5 shows you exactly how close this game will be, and home-court advantage could well be the deciding factor. The Rockets will, therefore, be delighted to be starting on terra firma, at the Toyota Center, hopefully using it as a launchpad for an out of this world season. To stretch the rocket-jokes further, we don’t think Houston will have a problem here.
LA Clippers @ Golden State Warriors, Friday 25th October, 3:30 am BST
Another contest highly anticipated to be a very tight affair is this game, in the early hours of Friday if you’re a UK-based NBA follower. Speaking of the UK, Golden State Warriors have a loyal fan base this side of the Atlantic, largely due to some of the big names they’ve had over the years, including their star Point Guard Stephen Curry, who will have half an eye on the end of season MVP prize.
Speaking of MVPs, Kawhi Leonard was one of the most important players for Toronto Raptors as they won the NBA title last season, but he’s now made the switch to the Clippers. At 21.co.uk, we’ve backed LA Clippers to finish top of Pacific Division, as well as predicting that they will ultimately win the Western Conference playoffs. That’s the reason we’re going with them to win on away soil here.
