NBA Week Two: Betting Tips
The NBA regular season returned last Wednesday, amid a mass of hysteria and intrigue, and 21.co.uk was right there at the forefront with our betting tips. This week, we’re back to once again provide you with some outstanding basketball betting tips ahead of the second calendar week of the NBA season. UK fans should note that the clocks going back means that tip-off times will be slightly earlier from here onwards.
Memphis Grizzlies @ LA Lakers, Wednesday 30th October, 2:30 GMT
After being beaten by LA Clippers in their opening night game, the Lakers have responded fantastically, registering two wins on the spin against Utah Jazz and Charlotte Hornets. Each of those games has been played at the Staples Centre, which is the venue for Wednesday morning’s game, although technically the first match was away to the Clippers, who share the arena. LA Lakers have broken the 100 point barrier in two of their games so far and will be confident of doing the same here.
Memphis Grizzlies are the side that we at 21.co.uk predicted to finish bottom of the Western Conference. Based on their first three results, it’s not hard to see why. Back-to-back defeats against Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls were followed up by a nail-biting 134-133 overtime win over Brooklyn Nets. They’ve managed over 100 points in every game so far and will push the Lakers as far as they can. We just don’t think that will be enough to take the win in the betting
Milwaukee Bucks @ Boston Celtics, Wednesday 30th October, 23:30 GMT
Boston Celtics are the most decorated team in the history of the NBA, but with their heyday a distant memory, they’re keen to challenge once more. Losing Al Horford and Kyrie Irving in the summer wasn’t helpful, but they’ve responded to an opening night defeat to the 76ers with two wins in a row over a New York Knicks side they were always expected to beat, but also an impressive 112-106 win over the reigning champions, Toronto Raptors. They’ll be quietly confident as they welcome Milwaukee Bucks to TD Garden.
The Bucks are 21.co.uk’s pick to top the Eastern Conference, although we don’t actually think they’ll win the playoffs. However, they may not even finish that high, as their weaknesses were exploited by Miami Heat as they lost in overtime last game. An opening day win at Houston Rockets was impressive though, but while their 129-112 victory over Cleveland Cavaliers gives them a degree of momentum, it still highlights a frailty on the defensive end.
Detroit Pistons @ Toronto Raptors, Wednesday 30th October, 23:30 GMT
Detroit Pistons beat Indiana Pacers in their opening game, which we astutely predicted in our Week 1 NBA Betting Tips, but then they lost heavily to Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers at Little Caesars Arena. However, fresh off the back of beating the Pacers a second time, the Pistons make a trip to the Raptors in their fifth match of the season, looking to take themselves into a positive win-loss record.
We all know Toronto Raptors surprised many people by winning the NBA last season, but despite the fact they lost some key players in the summer as their squad was picked apart, there’s a growing confidence at the Scotiabank Arena that they can challenge again. The blow of a road loss to the Celtics has been offset by three wins in their other games, against New Orleans Pelicans, Chicago Bulls, and Orlando Magic. It’s a tough one to call, but we think the Pistons will beat the spread.
Houston Rockets @ Brooklyn Nets, Friday 1st November, 23:00 GMT
Brooklyn Nets have been letting themselves down in their early matches in our opinion. Single point overtime losses to both Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies sandwiched their 4-point victory over the Knicks. By the time the Nets host the Rockets, they will have also welcomed Indiana Pacers to the Barclays Center, a match they have to win against a side who have also underwhelmed in the early stages of the NBA season.
We’ve gone on record as predicting Houston Rockets to finish at the top of the Western Conference, even if we think they’ll fail to win the playoffs. In order to achieve their goals this season, they’ll have to win against the ‘smaller’ sides, as they did against New Orleans Pelicans. The Rockets beat Oklahoma City Thunder in a 116-112 contest, and they’ll have great momentum if they can also overcome Washington Wizards before they take on the Nets, so we’re backing them to win in this one.
Chicago Bulls @ Indiana Pacers, Sunday 3rd November, 22:00 GMT
These teams have one win from five between them at the time of writing, but that could all change by the time they meet at the home of Indiana Pacers, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, on Sunday night. The Pacers have lost to Detroit Pistons twice and Cleveland Cavaliers once in their opening three games, and with a Cavaliers rematch, plus a trip to Brooklyn Nets before this clash, they could well be in dire straits by the time the Bulls arrive in town.
Chicago Bulls lost by a single point at Charlotte Hornets, before winning at Memphis Grizzlies. Any positivity that results created in the Bulls camp was swiftly stamped out by a 108-84 loss at home to the Raptors, and a 105-98 road loss to the New York Knicks. The Bulls face off with the Cavaliers away from home, as well as welcoming the Pistons to the United Center before this matchup, so time will tell exactly what state they’re in coming into this tie. That said, we fancy them to cover the spread.
