Rugby Union Betting at 21.co.uk
Rugby union is said to have originated in the town of Rugby in Warwickshire when Webb Ellis picked up a football and started running with it. Whether this is true or not is still debated but what cannot be doubted is the popularity of the sport. The internationals always attract large amounts of interest but the domestic league in England - the Premiership - also attracts thousands of supporters throughout the Winter. Outside of the home nations, France and Italy are the other two major countries on the European rugby scene with teams from all these countries competing for the Champions Cup annually. In the southern hemisphere, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa dominate the sport, not surprising perhaps given the sports commonwealth roots, but Argentina cannot be discounted following their vast improvement in recent years. The sport is played in numerous other countries with Rugby 7s proving popular on some of the Pacific Islands such as Fiji and Samoa. 21.co.uk’s Rugby Union Betting Markets
Rugby union betting features the usual outright and win markets available in other sports betting markets such as football betting. Handicaps on both full time result and 1st half results are also available which can provide value if you choose to bet on an uneven contest such as some of the games the Rugby World Cup can throw up. Alternatively you could consider the first to score market if your looking for your bet to be more likely to be settled early on. Last to score provides another option, as does the highest half market if you think one half will have more points scored in it then the other.
Rugby Union Betting Strategy and Tips
21.co.uk’s online casino strategy for betting on rugby is no different to any other team sports. Playing at home can provide an advantage due to the familiarity of the conditions and support that can be found there. Similar to rugby league, this isn’t as big an advantage as in football but is still noteworthy. The world rankings or league table could provide another good indicator of ability but injuries to key players can affect the strength of the side considerably and shouldn’t be discounted. An injury to the starting fly half can be hugely damaging to a teams chances of winning. As always, form can also have a bearing on the likelihood of each outcome.
Rugby Union Betting Glossary
New to rugby union betting? We’ve defined some key terms to get you started.
First to Score - This is the team you think will score first in the game. This can be either a penalty, drop goal or try.
Highest Half - This is which half, if any, will have the most points scored by both teams combined. A first half score of 13-3 would mean 16 points were scored in the first half. If this match finishes 20-10 then only 14 points were scored in the second half, meaning in this instance the first half would have been a winning bet.
Handicap 1st Half - This is where you bet on who will win the 1st half when that team is given a handicap. If you bet on ‘England -14.5’, for example, you are betting on England winning the first half, even if they had 14.5 points taken off their halftime score.
The Biggest Rugby Union Events
Like most sports, the World Cup is the biggest prize available and is contested every four years. It has a unique format with four groups of five leading a knockout stage starting at the quarter finals. Finishing in the top 3 in the group provides guaranteed entry to the next World Cup. The 2015 edition in England was dominated by the southern hemisphere with all four semi final spots going to teams from that side of the globe. For a more regular event the six nations, which is contested annually, features all four home nations plus France and Italy. While all teams set out to win every game, and with it the Grand Slam, there are multiple other trophies on offer. The Calcutta Cup - contested between England and Scotland - is just one such example. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa used to contest the southern hemisphere equivalent in the tri-nations but this was expanded in 2012 when Argentina joined to form The Rugby Championship. While discussing all these major events we haven’t even touched on the domestic scene demonstrating the depth of competitions that this sport offers.
