Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks Review
The original Da Vinci Diamonds slot has long been a favourite among casino players. It is perhaps one of the most popular slots to have been developed by leading game providers IGT, who are responsible for a number of other blockbuster slots such as Cleopatra slot and Golden Goddess. Da Vinci Diamonds is one of the most widely played slots, both in online casinos and land-based casinos, and has established itself as one of the biggest slots in the industry.
The game boasts a rather decadent game interface, themed around the exquisite artwork of Leonardo Da Vinci and the opulence of the Italian Renaissance era. The distinctive theme has no doubt contributed to the success of the Da Vinci Diamonds franchise, which lead to two sequels - Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play, and now, Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks.
About Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks
It wouldn’t be a Da Vinci Diamonds game without those famous Tumbling Reels. Da Vinci Diamonds slot is played on a five reel, four row set up and contains thirty paylines, and when a winning combination is landed, the Tumbling Reels will come into play. Winning symbols will disappear, allowing new ones to fall into their position. This means it’s possible to achieve multiple wins from a single spin, and we’re pleased to see this feature in Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks.
So what kinds of symbols can you expect to see in Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks? It’s predecessors showcased some sparkling gemstone symbols and they’ve made a return for the third installment. The highest paying symbol however is the Da Vinci Diamonds logo which pays 1000 for five on a winline, followed by portrait symbols of which there are three - the Mona Lisa, Madonna and Da Vinci himself. There is of course a Wild symbol which can substitute for all others except for Bonus symbols to form winning combinations. However, there’s also Giant 2x2 symbols available which we will cover later.
Aesthetically, there aren’t any huge differences between Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks and the first Da Vinci Diamonds. However, the newer version has certainly been given an upgrade, with higher quality graphics and smoother animations. Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks is a more modern and sleeker version of the older game.
Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks Bonus Features
What really sets Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks apart from the original is the amount of bonus features available. Da Vinci Diamonds offers a free spins feature in which six free games are initially awarded with the chance to retrigger. Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks offers five bonus features in total.
Giant 2x2 Portrait Symbols
These large portrait symbols could appear on any spin. A multiplier of between 2x and 4x is awarded for each Giant Portrait symbol involved in a line win during base game play. In the event that more than one of these symbols is part of a winning combination, the win is multiplied by the product of the multipliers.
Giant Portrait symbols can also be formed during tumbles when four matching portrait symbols land on adjacent reels. Giant Portrait symbols offer the chance of higher payouts, and the fact that they cover four symbol positions increases the chance of receiving a multiplier.
Mystery Portrait Feature
At the start of any standard spin, a non-winning Giant Portrait symbol could be transformed into a winning Giant Portrait symbol, so essentially this is an instant win bonus.
Masterworks Gallery Picker
The Masterworks Gallery Picker adds something a little different to Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks. Triggered by three Bonus Scatter symbols anywhere on reels 1, 2 and 3 in the base game, you’ll be taken to a new screen which depicts an art gallery. Choose one of three portraits which correspond to a special feature. The chosen feature will come into play during six initial free spins, and the options are Portrait Scatters, Boosted Multipliers and Gigantic 2x Wilds.
If this feature is selected in the Masterworks Gallery Picker, portrait symbols pay as Scatters. If a full Giant Portrait symbol appears on the reels, it counts as four Scatters. If half a Giant Portrait symbol is visible in the reel window, it will be counted as two. A 2x, 3x or 4x multiplier is awarded for each Giant Portrait symbols involved in a winning combination.
The Boosted Multipliers feature does what it says on the tin. For every Giant Portrait symbol included in a line win, a 4x, 5x or 6x multiplier is applied to the payout awarded. Again, if more than one Giant Portrait symbol is part of a winning combination, the win is multiplied by the product of the multipliers.
Gigantic 2x Wilds
If you choose the Gigantic 2x Wilds bonus in the Masterworks Gallery Picker, they may appear on any spin. They award a 2x multiplier for each Gigantic Wild symbol involved in a winning combination. A multiplier of either 2x, 3x or 4x will be awarded for each Giant Portrait symbol included in a line win. This bonus offers some great winning potential as you not only get Gigantic Wilds but multipliers as well.
Playing Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks
We played Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks for ten minutes in demo mode (available on most games when logged into your 21.co.uk account) to see what happend. The soundtrack is very much what you’d expect from a game themed around the Renaissance era, and a jaunty tune will greet your ears as soon as you enter the game. The interface is easy enough to navigate with all of your main buttons found just beneath the reels. You’ll find paytable, audio and game rules buttons in the top right hand corner of the screen.
We played at the minimum bet, which is forty coins (this cannot be changed) and a coin value of 1.00. This puts the minimum total bet at 40.00, which is high compared to a lot of other slots which allow much lower total bets of around 1.00 or lower. However, we found that this game (at least in demo mode) produced a fair amount of payouts.
The first spin landed a win of three red gemstone symbols but the following tumble of the reels was unsuccessful. This was a common pattern - wins were often but then no more than one additional tumble followed. Still, we aren’t complaining about another chance to win from a single wager. There’s a short pause between tumbles so you can keep up with what’s happening and check how much you’ve won from a successful spin, but you can use the fast-forward button to speed up the process if you wish.
We were lucky enough to be able to see many of the game’s special features in action, with several Giant Portrait symbols being added to the reels at random points during the ten minutes we played for. This provided varying wins, with the lowest being 24.00 and the highest being declared a “Big Win” which was a huge 2408.00. When this kind of payout is achieved, a cool animation appears on screen, with colourful diamonds showering the reels to the right and left hand sides of the game interface. The Mystery Portrait Feature came into play once, transforming a losing spin into a winning one which awarded a 6x multiplier as two Giant Portrait symbols were on the reels at the time - one with a 2x multiplier and one with a 3x multiplier.
The Masterworks Gallery Picker was not triggered, meaning we didn’t get to see any free spins or additional features that are not available during the base game. This is slightly disappointing but there was still plenty going on within standard play.
Remember that nothing is ever guaranteed when playing slot games and outcomes are determined by a Random Number Generator so no two games will be the same. This review is just one experience to give a little insight into what can happen during gameplay.
Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks: The Verdict
With such a big fanbase, the original Da Vinci Diamonds was always going to be hard to outdo. Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks captures everything we love about the older game but gives it a fresh coat of paint with a more modern, HD game interface and sleek animations. There’s also some original and innovative features on offer, setting it apart from not only its predecessors but from many other slots out there. We think this is definitely worth a spin if you’re a fan of online slots. The only downfall is the minimum bet is pretty high, so if you don’t consider yourself a high roller or just enjoy low stake spins, this may not be your new go-to game, but if you’re fine with a minimum bet of 40.00 plus, then Da Vinci Diamonds Masterworks is a great choice if you’re looking for something new in the online casino.
