England Vs South Africa T20 Preview

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, England take on fellow Group 2 side South Africa in the final series of the tour. After defeating South Africa in test cricket and drawing in the ODI format, England will be looking to pick up another win here to gain momentum ahead of their games against Pakistan and Australia. The interesting thing about this series is that many believe either England or South Africa will drop out of the World Cup in the group stage with the other joining India en route to the finals in November, so a win here could be crucial going into the tournament.

Head to Head since 2011

Back in the 2010 World Twenty20, England beat South Africa on their way to lifting the trophy with a 39 run win in Barbados. Since then a lot has changed and the sides are closer to being equally matched than ever before. But England would wait two years before facing off against South Africa again in T20 competition, starting in Chester-Le-Street, Durham.

England Vs South Africa 2012

South Africa travelled to England looking to avenge their loss in the World Cup. However, England had fallen from the dizzy heights of Champions by the time they played in Durham. This was demonstrated as opener Craig Kieswetter hit England’s highest score of 25 with the home side finishing on 118/7 before the visitors blew them out of the water. Rain stopped the second match with South Africa in control, but England clawed back in another rain-ruined evening as they hit their first day total in just 11 overs and South Africa could only manage merely 90/5 meaning that England drew the series.

Man of the Match: Quinton De Kock - 7/1

South Africa Vs England 2016

In-between the two series’ between these sides came another World T20 contest, wherein 2014, South Africa eliminated England in a thrilling contest. South Africa set England a target of 197 to win, and when all looked lost for England, Tim Bresnan’s late surge gave them hope, but two final singles by Bresnan and Broad meant that England couldn’t quite reach their target. Their tour of South Africa in February 2016 was also particularly poor as England only posted totals of 134 and 171 which were easily caught by the hosts. However, they later faced off again at the T20 World Cup, and England caught South Africa’s total of 229 despite losing Chris Jordan and David Willey with their first two balls of the last over before Moeen Ali dragged England over the line to redeem their poor performance in the earlier series.

First Match: South Africa to win - 27/20

England Vs South Africa 2017

The last series between these two sides was nearly three years ago as South Africa travelled to England and after the hosts were convincingly beaten by India this meant that England were chomping at the bit and desperate for victory. A solid bowling performance gave England a fantastic chance of winning, and a batting combination of Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow ensured they did exactly that. South Africa won the second day by three runs after Livingstone went was run out trying to get the final runs for England. This meant the game was tied going into the final day, but this time Hales was joined by Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan as the top-scoring players of the day as England put up a score of 182 to win. Tom Curran and Liam Plunkett put in some star performances with the ball to ensure England finished the series ahead.

England to win - 20/39

T20 Record since 2014

Opponent England (W-D-L) South Africa (W-D-L)
Afghanistan 1-0-0 3-0-0
Australia 2-0-5 3-0-6
Bangladesh 0-0-0 2-0-0
India 3-0-4 4-0-4
Netherlands 0-0-1 1-0-0
New Zealand 6-0-4 3-0-1
Pakistan 3-1-1 2-0-1
Sri-Lanka 4-0-1 4-1-4
West Indies 4-0-5 1-0-3
Zimbabwe 0-0-0 2-0-0

When you look at the head to head records of both of these sides, you wouldn’t think they are 3rd and 5th in the worldwide rankings. Oddly enough the top seed Pakistan are one of the only nations which both sides have a positive record against since 2014. Both sides also have a negative record against 10th ranked West Indies, which demonstrates that when it comes to T20 Cricket, anything can happen, so it is essential to check our Cricket Betting Tips before putting a bet on the T20 World Cup.

Our Verdict

England are the favourites for the first T20 given their higher ranking, but if you take a look at their previous tour of South Africa, they seriously struggled in the T20 series. That being said, in the last twelve months England looked a completely different team to what they were just a few years ago. They are full of confidence, and we think that will be the difference here as Jason Roy put in a fantastic performance for England and will come away with a high score in the first match.

Man of the Match: Jason Roy - 10/1
