Last 16 Betting Preview
We’re getting down to the nitty-gritty at Euro 2021 as we head into the knockout stages. With many teams looking to bounce back from poor performances in the groups, here at 21.co.uk, we’re looking at which teams we think will progress and who will be heading home.
Wales vs Denmark
Denmark went all out in their last group game, netting four goals at Russia in Copenhagen. Wales stuttered a little against Italy even though the Azzurri put out a weakened side and will need Gareth Bale to step up if they are to progress beyond the last 16. Considering all that, we’re going for a Denmark win with a score of 3-0.
Italy vs Austria
The Italians have put themselves out there as one of the teams to beat at Euro 2021. Topping Group A, they’re now undefeated in 30 international games, which is a record not to be sniffed at. Austria, on the other hand, were second-place finishers in their group, and even though they defeated Turkey 3-1, this game seems like an easy win for the Azzurri.
Netherlands vs Czech Republic
The Dutch were another team who finished top of their group at Euro 2021 and are putting their undefeated record on the line against the Czech Republic. Given that the Czechs couldn’t score against England, we don’t think they’ll provide the Netherlands defence with too many problems, so we’re going for a comprehensive 4-0 win to the Dutch.
Belgium vs Portugal
Both Belgium and Portugal are teams that are expected to progress to the latter stages of the competition. But, unfortunately, one of them will be facing an early exit. Portugal made hard work of their group games, even with Ronaldo leading the line, so they’ll need to pull a performance out of the bag here to see off a Belgian side who will be looking to build on their unbeaten run in the groups.
Croatia vs Spain
Croatia only just made it through to the knockout stages of the competition, which means for us this game is all about Spain, who will be looking to build on their 5-0 thrashing of Slovakia in the final group game. It took the Spanish squad a little while to warm up to tournament life, but they seem to have found their scoring boots, so we’re going for a 4-0 win to Spain.
France vs Switzerland
Heading to Euro 2021 as favourites, we expected France to get maximum points in Group F. However, this was not the case, and they progressed to the last 16 with only five points. They face a Switzerland side who finished second in their group, but will need something special to see off a France team looking to show their worth in the competition, so we’re going for a French victory in this game.
England vs Germany
England take on an old foe in the last 16 of Euro 2021 as Germany head to Wembley Stadium. It’s no secret the Three Lions have underperformed so far in the competition. Despite topping the group, they’ve only scored twice, something fans will want to change against a German side who conceded two goals to Hungary. That said, Harry Kane will need to up his game against the likes of Hummels and Rudiger, but we’re still going for an England win here.
Sweden vs Ukraine
Sweden have been quite the surprise package of Euro 2021. Topping Group E ahead of Spain, we wouldn’t normally see them as major players in a big tournament. However, given their potential route to the final, we can’t rule them out. Although Ukraine managed to qualify thanks to a third-place finish, we think Sweden will have too much for them in this game with Emil Forsberg leading the line.
Euro 2021 Betting Overall Winner
It can be incredibly difficult to pick the winner of any international tournament because not every team involved is perfect or has previous experience on the world stage. Current world champions France are favourites in the betting market, and given the fact they have Kylian Mbappe in their squad, a semi-final place isn’t beyond them. Italy, Netherlands and Belgium also have a chance of making the final stages of the competition, and every England fan will be hoping for a rerun of the 2018 World Cup, except this time they’ll be hoping they can make it to the final game at Wembley Stadium.
Euro 2021 Group Winners
Before we get to the competition's knockout stages, teams have to make it out of their group. Looking ahead, many of the names theoretically shouldn't have an issue sailing through the tournament. However, that's not always the case, and as we've seen in the past, teams can be eliminated by one result not going their way. With that in mind, we've picked out the teams we think will top each of the six Euro 2021 groups.
Euro 2021 Group Previews
Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Wales Certainly not one of the easiest groups to call, Group A features Italy, Turkey, Switzerland and home nations team Wales. Italy are currently on a 23-game unbeaten run heading into Euro 2021, so we expect they’ll finish in the top spot, which leaves the second qualification spot up for grabs. With that in mind, we’re going to give Wales and Gareth Bale a chance in the limelight and hope they’ll make it to the knockout stages.
Belgium, Russia, Denmark, Finland In theory, this should be one of the easiest groups to call. Belgium’s squad is full of recognisable names, including Romelu Lukaku, Youri Tielemans, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne, which means nine points should be realistic. Denmark start the tournament with home advantage, meaning they should finish second, which means unless Finland pull a result out of the bag they’ll finish in the bottom spot.
** Ukraine, Netherlands, Austria, North Macedonia** Given the unknown quantities, Group C looks to be harder to call. Ukraine are known for score draws, namely 1-1., but here it’s the orange shirts of the Netherlands who we expect to dominate the group with Memphis Depay, Frankie De Jong and Luuk De Jong leading their attack. This leaves second spot up for grabs and we think Austria could manage that here.
England, Croatia, Czech Republic, Scotland Probably the most important group for many of the home nations fans as it features both England and Scotland. Both teams have played well heading into the tournament, but the betting markets expect England to progress, while second spot between Croatia and the Czech Republic is up for grabs.
** Spain, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia** Spain were both the former Kings of the World and Europe back in the 2010s, and their coach has been bold in this tournament by naming only a 24 man squad. They should top the group, but Poland have Robert Lewandowski in their firing line, and the Bayern man could prove an issue for many teams if he's not shut down in the box.
Germany, France, Portugal, Hungary Every tournament has a group of death, and for Euro 2021 it's Group F. France are one of the tournament favourites. Still, with Germany and reigning champions Portugal also looking for a place in the knockout stages, we think this group will go right to the wire for the first two spots, sadly leaving Hungary in the bottom position.
Player of the Tournament Euro 2021
When looking at the football betting odds on offer for the tournament player at Euro 2021, it’s hard to look beyond the footballing genius that is Kylian Mbappe. Unstoppable for France, he’s guaranteed a place in the starting 11 and is also guaranteed to get on the score sheet. But just as important as an attack is a defence, which is why we’re going for Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante as we expect the Champions League winner to stand out for the whole tournament.
Young Player of Euro 2021
When looking through the betting markets for young player of Euro 2021, almost every player stands out as a major player in their respective leagues, having won either the league title, domestic trophy or the Champions League. However, with Foden, Mount and Sancho possibly facing a battle for places in the England midfield, we’re going for Italian midfielder Nicolo Barella who sits at odds of 15/1.
