Premier League predictions

Written 24th December 2019

After a big week for TM, the Premier League Predictions are tightly poised at 10-8 going into week 19 of the Premier League season. MG was guaranteed to spend Christmas in the podium position but a week is a very long time in Football and when it comes to Premier League betting anything can happen, and TM could be level with MG come New Year, providing he doesn’t spend the Christmas period playing at the top UK gambling site.

This week we have a plethora of fantastic football action as we see Liverpool travel to the King Power Stadium to take on 2nd placed Leicester City and Manchester United take on Newcastle United in what should be an intriguing contest. There is also Mikel Arteta and Carlo Ancelotti’s first games in charge of their respective clubs which should lead to some flair to an already unique boxing day of football. Without further ado, let’s get into our Football Betting Tips for week 19 of the Premier League season.

Tottenham Hotspur Vs Brighton & Hove Albion - Thursday 26th December (12:30)

Overview

Jose Mourinho will be looking to put Tottenham’s slightly embarrassing defeat against Chelsea behind them by beating a side who have also inflicted a very embarrassing defeat on Spurs this season. The Seagulls beat their opposition 3-0 in a game that was overshadowed by a freak injury to Tottenham keeper - Hugo Lloris - Who is out of action until 2020. Brighton are without a win in three but their loss against Sheffield United on Saturday was their first in December.

TM‘s Prediction

Tottenham weren't great against Chelsea, that’s for sure, but Brighton were also fairly lacklustre against Sheffield United. Boxing Day often throws up some surprising results, as does the early game on matchdays, so I’ll take a punt on a double chance.

Double Chance: Draw or Brighton - 7/4

MG’s Prediction

Spurs need to rebound after their dreadful performance at the weekend but they’re without Son who has been their best player this season. This means that someone will have to step up and make a difference here otherwise they’ll suffer back to back defeats. I think it’ll be Dele Alli who makes the difference and we’ll see Spurs win narrowly.

Alli to score first 9/2

Aston Villa Vs Norwich City - Thursday 26th December (15:00)

Overview

Like Spurs, Norwich are also looking to avenge an embarrassing defeat against their boxing day opponents. Some may remember that Villa systematically tore Norwich apart in a 5-1 win at Carrow Road. This was the first time that Villa had avoided defeat against the Canaries since 2017, which made the victory sweeter. However, with Villa’s current form this game could be more random than our best casino games UK as either side could win, a trashing could occur and you wouldn’t be surprised if it ended 4-4 or 0-0.

MG’s Prediction

I’m going to try something different here as I think this will be quite a nasty Christmas affair. Both sides need the points and I think there will be a few full blooded challenges and in my opinion most of Villa’s attacks will come down the wings, I can see Alexander Tettey having a troubled time when Jack Grealish cuts inside.

Alexander Tettey to be carded - 39/20

TM‘s Prediction

Aston Villa were clueless for large periods against Southampton, while Norwich threw away a lead for the umpteenth time this season. Both sides are in the relegation zone for a reason, but I think it may produce an interesting game. I’ll go for goals, rather than a result in this one.

Over 3.5 Goals - 13/10

Bournemouth Vs Arsenal - Thursday 26th December (15:00)

Overview

Mikel Arteta takes the reins as Arsenal’s third manager since 1996. However, in his first game in charge, he will take on the longest-serving manager currently in the Premier League - Eddie Howe. In-fact during Eddie Howe’s first season at Bournemouth, Arteta was vice-captain at Arsenal in just his second season at the club. Arteta will know that if he can have half the impact on Arsenal as Howe at Bournemouth, he’ll go down well in North London. As for this game, once again this could be anything, stats suggest Arsenal should win but we know Arsenal and nothing is guaranteed.

TM‘s Prediction

It’s debatable whether Mikel Arteta is the man to rescue Arsenal. They’re a club that should be challenging for the top 4 at the very least, and currently they’re battling to get in the top half. Bournemouth won’t have a better opportunity to beat a side they’ve only taken 4 points off in nine Premier League meetings, but I think Arsenal might just edge it.

Arsenal to Win - Evens

MG’s Prediction

Arsenal fans will probably be happy with a half decent performance here after seeing a dire lack of effort and ideas upfront. I do think they have enough quality to get something at Bournemouth, I’m not confident enough to go with an exact score even though I think this will finish 1-1. So, I’ll go with a simple draw with goals.

Score Draw - 3/1

Chelsea Vs Southampton - Thursday 26th December (15:00)

Overview

Both these sides picked up excellent wins at the weekend as Southampton beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Villa Park and Chelsea picked up a crucial 2-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Southampton haven’t beaten Chelsea in nine attempts in all competitions and lost 4-1 at St Mary’s earlier in the season where Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount shone. One thing you can’t account for, however, is form and the one in form player here is Danny Ings. The Southampton striker has scored 7 goals in his last 7 appearances and although Chelsea looked relatively sharp defensively against Spurs, you wouldn’t bet against Ings making it 8 from 8 here.

MG’s Prediction

Chelsea impressed me at the weekend but nowhere near as much as Southampton did in their win against Aston Villa. Danny Ings is now one of the top scorers in the division and in my opinion will keep them up and score here.

Danny Ings to score anytime - 37/20

TM‘s Prediction

Southampton are beginning to cause other teams issues - or, more accurately, Danny Ings is. Chelsea may have earned a good win at Tottenham, but once again I can see them falling into a trap against a side they perceive to be a lot smaller than themselves, as they did against West Ham and Bournemouth in recent matches.

Double Chance: Draw or Southampton - 23/10

Crystal Palace Vs West Ham United - Thursday 26th December (15:00)

Overview

Few teams have the tenacity to dig in and grind out results like Crystal Palace. However, this doesn’t suit them at home against teams of a similar level. That being said, in games West Ham have played this season, they have been very susceptible to counter-attacking football and have been punished on numerous occasions. With Jordan Ayew and Christian Benteke upfront, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. However, if Andros Townsend or Wilfred Zaha can make the most of the situation, the Hammers could be in trouble.

TM‘s Prediction

This is an odd fixture at the moment, with both sides proving largely unpredictable. However, given that it’s my job to predict what’s going to happen, I think Crystal Palace will win it by the odd goal - they’ve looked more lively than their opponents, and Manuel Pellegrini’s days at West Ham feel numbered.

Crystal Palace to Win - 13/10

MG’s Prediction

I can actually see this being a snoozefest. A 1-0 win where Palace score on the counter. However, if this weekend was any indication Palace can’t make or finish their dinner. It seems fairly certain there will be an odd number of goals here.

Goals: Odds - Evens

Everton Vs Burnley - Thursday 26th December (15:00)

Overview

Carlo Ancelotti may be thankful that Everton’s last six games are out of the way before he signed on the dotted line and that his first game is against Burnley. Sean Dyche has a very direct, powerful side and if the Toffees aren’t at their best, they could easily slip to a defeat against Burnley. That being said since taking over Parma in 1996 Ancelotti has won all of his first professional games in charge of clubs. The only time Ancelotti hasn’t won his first league game was at Milan where they drew 0-0 against Piacenza but they won a Coppa Italia tie 3-0 in his first competitive game, so the stats don’t look in favour of Burnley.

MG’s Prediction

Everton probably won’t be good enough to beat Burnley on this occasion but I do think they’ll dominate the game. How this game goes will very much depend on Richarlison who I think holds the key to a successful Everton side. I’ll go with the Brazilian to score any time.

Richarlison to score any time - 5/4

TM‘s Prediction

Everton looked a bit lacklustre in front of the Arsenal goal in their 0-0 draw, while Burnley edged to a second successive 1-0 win against Bournemouth. I think it will take Carlo Ancelotti a while to get his side firing on all cylinders, but I do think they’ll have enough to beat Burnley in the end.

Everton to Win & BTTS - 11/5

Sheffield United Vs Watford - Thursday 26th December (15:00)

Overview

Both these sides picked up wins at the weekend and Watford will be looking to pick up back to back league wins for the first time this season against a Sheffield United side who have won three games on the bounce and only lost one game since the start of October, which was a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle. One statistic that might surprise fans is that all of Sheffield United’s five losses in all competitions this season have come at Bramall Lane meaning a win for Nigel Pearson’s Watford might not be so unlikely.

TM‘s Prediction

I thought Watford would get a result against Manchester United, and that Sheffield United would edge it against Brighton. Nigel Pearson has instilled an attacking approach into his Watford side, but I can see them operating more defensively here, while Sheffield United will want to avoid slipping up at home again. An odd tip here, but one I believe has value.

Under 10 Corners - 29/20

MG’s Prediction

I think Nigel Pearson will have his side prepared for this one and the Blades aren’t great at home. I’ll back the draw here.

Draw - 51/20

Manchester United Vs Newcastle United - Thursday 26th December (17:30)

Overview

Newcastle haven’t done the league double over Manchester United since 1930 when they beat them 4-3 and 7-4. Somehow, we don’t think we’ll get that many goals this time around, especially considering Newcastle haven’t won at Old Trafford since 2013 when Yohan Cabaye scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. Ole might be feeling the pressure after Saturday’s defeat to Watford and another defeat here could spell the end of Solskjaer’s reign at Manchester United.

MG’s Prediction

Newcastle aren’t exactly the best team to watch but they have been effective this season. I can’t see them picking up a result here though. They’re typically poor in Manchester and I can see that repeating here. However, how under 2.5 goals is above evens I do not know. So that’s my bet.

Under 2.5 Goals - 11/10

TM‘s Prediction

Manchester United have looked good against some of the bigger teams the Premier League has to offer, but woeful against others. Apart from the occasional blip, Newcastle have been outstanding since a 5-0 loss to Leicester at the end of September, and I fancy them to get something here.

Double Chance: Draw or Newcastle - 47/20

Leicester City Vs Liverpool - Thursday 26th December (20:00)

Overview

This is definitely the clash of the week in our opinion. Leicester had chances against Manchester City but will regret taking a more defensive approach to the game after a 3-1 defeat. You would think a Liverpool win here would virtually guarantee the title returning to Merseyside this season though following their World Club Cup final in Qatar, if there was ever a game they may be less than 100%, it would be here and you can’t afford to be less than 100% against the Foxes.

TM‘s Prediction

Leicester are an incredible side, and they’ll want to stay in what remains of a title challenge - although they’d be thrilled with a top 4 place come the end of the season. Liverpool will need to be at their best to continue their fantastic start to the season. I’m sure there will be chances, and probably a bagful of goals.

Over 3.5 Goals - 17/10

MG’s Prediction

[Virgil Van Dijk will have a tough time against Jamie Vardy and if this Liverpool side is feeling even the slightest bit of fatigue from the games in Qatar, we’ll find out here. I don’t think Leicester will win but I do think Jamie Vardy will get his 18th goal of the season.

Vardy to score anytime - 23/20

Wolves Vs Manchester City - Friday 27th December (19:45)

Overview

Manchester City picked up an important win last time out whilst Wolves looked competent yet unremarkable in their win against Norwich. However, considering Wolves have already beaten Man City this season and are showing little fatigue following their Europa League Group Stage. Pep Guardiola and his men will be fearful of back to back defeats against a Wolves side who have won just 33% of their Premier League games this season.

MG’s Prediction

Wolves tend to up their game against Manchester City and I can see that happening again here. The Citizens will need the points but I can’t help but think they’ll be torn apart by Adama Traore again and with Traore to score at 5/1 I’m awfully tempted but I think City will have learned from their mistakes and do their best to cut off the route to goal, leaving so much space for Traore to get an assist

Adama Traore to get an assist - 7/1

TM‘s Prediction

I think it’s scandalous that this fixture isn’t being played on Boxing Day, but given the intensity and prowess of both of these teams, you can understand why. Wolves can upset any apple-cart placed in front of them, while Manchester City can create chances from nothing. It will be intriguing, but I think City will get their win in the end.

Manchester City to Win & BTTS - 6/4
